The Swedish-based company Mionix has released a new line of professional high-end gaming mouse pads developed using their Surface Quality Analyser Tool. Using the tool, Mionix has a formula to determine a rating for data loss between the surface and a mouse sensor. Mousepads with an 8/10 or higher rating provide no tracking loss and shouldn't negatively affect gaming performance. The Sargas line – 320, 400 & 900 – all rate an 8 using the tool, but does that translate into a must-have mousepad for gamers?
Hoping to define the new standard of uncoated gaming surfaces, the Sargas 900 – consisting of a 900mm x 320mm surface – is more a desk pad than a mousepad. With only a 2mm thickness and natural rubber backside, this desk pad stays low to the surface and won't shift on you. Honestly, this thing will not move... ever!
Have you ever had your mouse cursor occasionally skip across the screen? Isn't that one of the most annoying things in the world? Using a high-quality mousepad/desk pad will make all the difference. When first using the Sargas 900, I was surprised at the slightly higher friction when sliding the mouse across the surface. Will it take some time to get used to it? Probably, depending on your previous product, but in the end, you will be happy that you made the switch. The added friction gives you better control when continually moving the mouse around.
Covering up my entire desk from left to right – leaving only a quarter of an inch on either side of the desk uncovered – the Sargas 900 is the biggest gaming surface I have ever used. 900mm is just about 35 inches or 3 feet – for those who don't want to do the math. Use those dimensions ahead of time to judge whether this will work with your current PC setup. If you use a lower sensitivity setting on your mouse, you now have a much larger working space. While the edges of the 900 are frayed, similar to both the Sargas 320 and 400, your wrist will most likely not be rubbing against the bothersome edges due to the placement on your desk. Over time, however, the edges become smooth to the touch, and you won't even notice them.
As with the other products in the Sargas line, there is a shallow crescent cutout in the front, but it does beg the question: why would you design a product to cover an entire desk, but leave just enough space in the center open to collect dust? If it does bother you, flip the desk pad around – don't worry, your PC won't mind.
The Sargas 900 was designed to be placed underneath your mouse and keyboard, which gives you a soft cushion for resting both your wrists. No longer will you have to worry about having enough space on the side of your keyboard to fit a mousepad. The surface's flexibility allows it to be easily rolled up and put back into the packaging for easy storage.
If you are in the market for a new mousepad/desk pad, maybe you should look at the Sargas 900. Providing comfort across your entire desk, it is the perfect addition to a PC gamer's setup – if you have space for it. The added surface area worries me regarding spills or crumbs – although it can be easily cleaned. Even so, I find the Sargas 900 the best choice for gamers, and I don't think I can even go back to a tiny mousepad after using the desk pad.
