Sony closes Driveclub and Motorstorm developer Evolution Studios

SCE Worldwide Studios released a statement earlier today, announcing they are officially shutting down Evolution Studios (developer of Driveclub and Motorstorm), to ensure they [Sony] remains competitive and that resources are working on "innovative and commercially viable projects." This marks the end of an era, as Evolution Studios was preparing additional content for DriveClub (releasing today), as well as Driveclub VR, which was shown at this years GDC. It is the second European racing game developer Sony has shut down in the past 4 years. In 2012, Sony closed Sony Liverpool, developer of the beloved Wipeout franchise.

Evolution Studios suffered from significant layoffs only a year ago, and the 2014 launch of Driveclub had severe problems and server issues. You may recall, Driveclub was originally supposed to be the leading game for PlayStation Plus at launch, before it was delayed. The studio has worked through all of the issues since launch, releasing a plethora of free and paid downloadable content, including expanding the game to include motorcycles.

Sony may have shut the doors at Evolution Studios, but Driveclub will continue to be supported by Sony.
