Road Not Taken Preview – Have you made the right choice?

At E3 2014, I was lucky enough to have the CEO of Spry Fox, David Edery give me a hands-on preview of their latest game Road not Taken, an original puzzle game about life and loss. As a forest ranger, you are able to levitate objects. Your environment, an ever changing forest that has been recently been plagued by a massive snowstorm. Your mission (if you choose to accept), rescue the children lost in the forest. Searching for the children will not be an easy task as you will face barriers, wild animals, spirits, and lots of exciting challenges.

The first level I played was about rescuing the lost children in a nearby village. At first glance, it looked easy enough, you pick up items in the forest and line them up to clear a path to the next area. When I finished the level, I collected my reward for rescuing the lost children, which then can be used to help the townsfolk. David explained to me that the better your relationship with the townsfolk, the more chances you’ll have for them to help you later on in your adventure.

The next level was a little different, allowing me to combine items that was in the area. I took three honeycombs, then lined them up to generate a jar of honey, filling my character’s stamina. Crafting it seems, will play a major factor in the final game.

Stamina is an essential part of the game, as levitating and carrying objects will drain your stamina. Ideally you’ll want to throw objects around the area to minimize stamina usage. Be careful, some spirits that you encounter can consume your stamina. If you run out of stamina, you’ll have to start over.

It seems what I was able to play at E3 2014 was only the tip of the iceberg for Road Not Taken. The game will be available on Playstation 4, PS Vita, PC and Mac (via Steam). It was just announced that Road Not Taken will release on PlayStation 4 and PC on August 5, 2014 with the PS Vita version to be released at a later date.
