Konami announces Metal Gear: Survive at Gamescom 2016

Konami surprised the Gamescom 2016 audience with the announcement of Metal Gear: Survive, a multiplayer cooperative game set in an alternative timeline/universe to their titular Metal Gear franchise. The trailer below gives some idea to the game, showing the destruction of Mother Base at the end of Ground Zeroes. However, rather than having the structure and surviving soldiers fall into the ocean, strange wormholes open in the sky sucking them and everything else around into some sort of other dimension populated by strange, zombie-like creatures.

Even for the standard level of crazy in the Metal Gear series, Survive seems to veer off into deep left field. According to Konami, the game will continue to capture the stealth-based gameplay of the series, but based on the trailer it appears to be more action-oriented than the previous games. It remains to be seen just what the game is about, but given Konami's recent history regarding the franchise, maybe the company is attempting to recreate the brand without its original producer behind the helm.

On a more positive note, the game is expected to be more in line with Ground Zeroes overall and will come in at a lower price point, though we have heard rumblings that it will be around $30. The game has a tentative release date of 2017 currently.
