Publisher 505 Games has announced Control Ultimate Edition will release via Steam on August 27 before coming to any other platform where the game is currently available. It will launch on additional platforms on the following dates:
Only those that purchase Control Ultimate Edition on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will receive a free next-gen digital upgrade to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X version of the game. Control Ultimate Edition contains the base game, the already released first expansion "The Foundation," the upcoming second expansion "AWE," and all of the content updates since the release of the original game. Those that supported the game when it launched last year in 2019, and purchased the Season Pass will NOT be eligible for the free next-gen digital upgrade, even though they own the same content included in Control Ultimate Edition.
Since the announcement, there has been a fury of backlash, both across various message boards and Twitter, condemning the decision to leave Season Pass owners out of the next-gen digital upgrade. I have to agree that this is certainly a choice (a very bad one), especially considering the content is the same. Also, you have to take into account that buying the game and Season Pass separately at launch costs more than the new Ultimate Edition SKU.
